Craig Wright, the man who fraudulently claimed to be Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto, received a one year in prison for being in contempt of court.
Craig Wright Handed Court Loss Amid Satoshi Nakamoto Claims
According to reports, Wright was officially sentenced to one year in prison with a suspension for two years Judge James Mellor in the U.K. for filing an over $1 trillion lawsuit against X founder Jack Dorsey and Bitcoin developers at large amid his claims that he was the pseudonymous cryptocurrency creator.
Mellor ultimately ruled that Wright had violated a court order earlier in the year that mandated the computer scientist stop pursuing legal action in the U.K. against those who deny his claims of being Nakamoto.
“When it comes to the grounds of contempt I have found each of them provable beyond a reasonable doubt,” Mellor said.
Wright’s suspended sentence means that he will only go behind bars should he reoffend within the two year suspension time frame.
Wright, allegedly appearing during the hearing via livestream, declined to comment outside of announcing his intention to appeal the ruling.
Who Is The Real Bitcoin Creator?
Wright has been the center of international controversy in recent years over his claim that he is Satoshi Nakamoto, with Mellor ruling this past March that there was “overwhelming” evidence he is not the Bitcoin creator, noting that he most likely committed forgery in order to falsely prove he authored 2008’s famous “White Paper.”
The case against Wright was formally launched by the Crypto Open Patent Alliance, a non-profit dedicated to the advancement of cryptocurrencies funded by key players in the emerging tech sector including Dorsey and Coinbase, and saw key proof-of-work developer Adam Back testify against him.
“It is now clearer than ever – clear beyond any doubt – that Dr Wright is not Satoshi Nakamoto,” COPA’s website currently reads.
In accordance with a court order, Wright has since updated his website with a legal notice stating that he is not actually Nakamoto detailing that he lied “extensively and repeatedly” while he “attempted to create a false narrative by forging documents ‘on a grand scale.’”
“In advancing his false claim to be Satoshi through multiple legal actions, Dr Wright committed “a most serious abuse” of the process of the courts of the UK, Norway and the USA,” Wright’s website reads.
