Tron is preparing to launch a gas-free transaction feature for Tether’s stablecoin (USDt). This new function will allow users to send USDt on the blockchain without paying transaction fees. Tron’s founder, Justin Sun, announced on Feb. 25 that the update will go live within the next week.

Tron was once the cheapest blockchain for transferring USDt. However, in late 2024, gas fees surged, sometimes exceeding $9 per transaction.

Currently, the gas fees for TRC-20 USDt transfers range from $3.20 to $6.50 per transaction.

The sharp increase in fees led to widespread frustration among users, many of whom previously relied on Tron for its low-cost transactions.
The new feature will allow users to send USDt on the blockchain without needing TRX (Tron’s native token) to cover gas fees. Sun also invited wallet providers and platforms interested in supporting the feature to contact JustLend DAO, blockchain’s official lending platform.
Tron Has Been Developing This Solution for Months
Tron began working on a gas-free transaction tool in mid-2024 to address the rising costs of sending USDt.
On December 9, 2024, USDt transaction fees on the blockchain peaked above $9. Many users pointed out that blockchain was no longer the most affordable network for stablecoin transfers.
In response, Tron accelerated its work on gas-free transactions. Sun had originally planned to release this feature by the fourth quarter of 2024 but is now rolling it out in early 2025.
Will This Make Tron the Cheapest Option Again?
Tron’s goal is to bring back low-cost stablecoin transfers and restore user confidence. Sun believes this update will also help large companies deploy stablecoin services more easily and encourage mass adoption of blockchain technology.
With the gas-free feature launching soon, the blockchain aims to compete with other blockchains and re-establish itself as a top choice for cheap and efficient USDt transactions.
